In reality the brush requires a great hand release and must be determined and accurate as the colors dry quickly and tend to mix with each other creating effects that, if unwanted, can be difficult to correct. It is not possible, in fact, to make corrections with overlays of the color as it is done in other techniques: each brush is definitive.
On the other hand, the speed of realization makes it possible to take practice more quickly than other techniques: “After so many watercolors, we also discovered that we are familiar with artistic expression and little by little we manage to command our hand and communicate what we want through shapes and colors “(artekjara.it).
The portability of the materials is another advantage that has made this technique very popular among travelers and artists who love to draw outdoors. Also the preparation is very simple, since the colors (pigments combined with natural arabic gum) are obtained by diluting with water.
The most used support for this technique is paper, the one with the highest percentage of pure cotton, as this material does not deform excessively in contact with water, but cardboard, parchment, silk and even firewood can also be used.
Normally the sheet is prepared with a pencil design (this is why it is necessary to have basic knowledge of the design techniques to be able to face this technique). Then three fundamental techniques can be applied to make a watercolor:
1. Overlapping layers: color spots are left if they are overlapping each other in order to obtain pictorial depth and can represent light and shadows.
2. Wet on wet: the color is distributed on the sheet of previously wet paper so that the colors diffuse into the support.
3. Wet on dry: the color is placed on dry paper after it has been diluted in water.
